Organized by ASEAN-Korea Centre and ASEAN University Network (AUN)Supported by ASEAN Secretariat, ROK Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pukyoung National University Global Area Studies Center, Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam Background: With the beginning of dialogue partnership in 1989, ASEAN and Korea have become strong partners in all aspects of political-security, economy and socio-culture.

ASEAN is Korea’s second largest trading partner and third largest investment destination, while Korea is ASEAN’s fifth largest trading partner.

The competition ended on 1 June and it attracted a total of 56 entries from both the ‘Open’ and ‘Pre-University’ categories.

The final judging panel comprised Mr Toh Han Li (CE, CCCS), CCCS Commission Member - Prof Wong Poh Kam (NUS Business), Dr Tan Teck Yong (NTU Economics), Consumer Protection Resource Panel member - Mr Eugene Toh (MTI) and Mr Quek Choon Yang (STB), Mr Adrian Kemp (Houston Kemp), Mr James Allan (Frontier Economics) and Dr Burton Ong (NUS Law).

The wisdom of housing competition and consumer protection policies in a single agency finds its root in the recognitions that these policies have a common, overarching goal for enhancing consumer welfare and that when applied properly, they reinforce one another.

To help shed light on how an agency may take advantage of its combined role to make markets work well for both businesses and consumers, this article will first discuss the opportunities and benefits offered by housing two functions in a single agency.A well-connected ASEAN will bring its goods, services and people together, creating a foundation for a more resilient, competitive and prosperous ASEAN Community.What are the key areas ASEAN should focus on to fulfill its connectivity visions?Since then, the relationship has expanded and deepened to become a strategic partnership for peace and prosperity in 2010.This year, ASEAN and Korea celebrate the 30th anniversary of their dialogue partnership.How can we effectively promote ASEAN’s unique and diverse cultures in Korea?In what ways can ASEAN and Korea cooperate to facilitate and promote the ‘ASEAN Wave’ in Korea? 30 Years of ASEAN-Korea Relations: Retrospect and Prospect The ASEAN-Korea relations began with the establishment of the sectoral dialogue partnership in 1989.How has the ASEAN-Korea relations evolved over the past 30 years?How should the dialogue partnership progress forward?In conducting market studies and advocating the policies, a single agency again has the strength of carrying out both competition and consumer protection functions in a comprehensive and balanced manner.This paper proposes the establishment of a single government agency to oversee competition and consumer protection policies in Singapore.
